My Review of the Movie ‘Unsung Hero’

Unsung Hero, rated PG
** ½

This faith-based film tells the true story of the Smallbone family from Australia. The film is written and directed by Richard L. Ramsey and Joel Smallbone, one-half of Christian musical artists For King & Country.
The film begins in 1990 in Australia where David Smallbone, played by his son Joel Smallbone, works as a successful concert promoter for Christian musicians such as Stryper. David and his wife Helen, played by Daisy Betts (Last Resort, Chicago Fire), live in a large home, have six children and a seventh on the way. While David pursues his dream in music, Helen looks after the children and the home.
But David suffers a major loss when a recession impacts Amy Grant’s Australian tour. He loses everything. And now nobody wants him to handle their tours.
As a result, he convinces Helen to move the family from Sydney, Australia to Nashville to work in the Christian music industry there. Helen agrees to give the move two years, even though it means leaving family, friends, schools, etc.

25 More of My Favorite Quotes from Truth for Life: 365 Daily Devotions Volume Two by Alistair Begg

Alistair Begg has written two volumes of Truth for Life: 365 Daily Devotions. I have used these volumes the past two years as a part of my devotional reading. You can read my review of the book here (please link to the review in blog post 272). Here are 25 more of my favorite quotes from the book:

  • Do not neglect your Bible. Ask God to work in you as you open it up to revive your soul, to make you wise, to bring you joy, and to light your path.
  • God’s purpose for His people in every age is that we will depend upon Him entirely.
  • Christ is the object of all our worship. He is the source of all our joy. He is the one who deserves all our obedience. He is the focus of all our praise. And we are accepted in Him.
  • For it is when you realize you have nothing that you are in just the right position for Christ to be your everything:
  • Prayer is simply too great a privilege for any Christian to ignore and too great a necessity for any of us to neglect.
  • He answers all your prayers exactly when He knows it is right to and in precisely the manner that is always best for you.
  • In whatever remains of today, allow yourself to enjoy all that God in His sovereignty brings into your life, seek to obey Him in those things, and rest easy in Him who orders every season for your good and His glory.
  • Affliction is a significant means by which God forms our character, but it is also a means by which He reveals our character.

Sing! The Great Commission World Tour Live – Keith & Kristyn Getty and Friends
****

A live album has been released from the annual Sing! conference each year since the conferences began in 2017. This is probably my favorite of all of those releases. It is billed as Sing! The Great Commission World Tour Live, as it includes songs from Sing! events in Belfast, Singapore and Sydney, in addition to the Sing! Conference in Nashville.
The album features sixteen songs and two readings, with contributions from Keith and Kristyn Getty, Matt Boswell, Matt Papa, CityAlight, Chris Tomlin, Andrew Peterson and more. Here are a few comments about each song.

Truth for Life: 365 Daily Devotions Volume 2 by Alistair Begg. The Good Book Company. 384 pages. 2022
****

This is the second of two volumes of daily devotional readings from respected pastor Alistair Begg. I have used these two volumes as a part of my devotional reading the past two years.
Each of the daily readings begins with a scripture passage. In the reading for that day, the author aims to explain the passage, to encourage the reader from them, and to reflect on how they inspire and equip us to enjoy living for Christ in every area of our lives. At the bottom of each reading, you will see three icons. These are a prompt to say to yourself: Now that I have read and considered these verses… how is God calling me to think differently? how is God reordering my heart’s affections—what I love? what is God calling me to do as I go about my day today? Also included is “Bible Through the Year” reading plan.
If you are looking for a book to use for your devotional reading, I would recommend each of these volumes. Here are 25 of my favorite quotes from volume two:

The Importance of a Strong Work Ethic

As a leader, having team members with a strong work ethic was always extremely important to me. A strong work ethic can include a number of items, some of which are:

  • Attitude
  • Integrity
  • Reliability
  • Dedication
  • Initiative
  • Adaptability
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability
  • Quality
  • Discipline

What would you add to this list?

As a leader, I would rather have team members with an excellent work ethic than those who might have greater skills, but a poor work ethic. Continue reading

The Complete Budokan 1978 – Bob Dylan
*** ½

The first of many times I saw Bob Dylan in concert was at the old Chicago Stadium on October 17, 1978 on his Street Legal tour. My future wife Tammy, who I had been dating for just over a year, and I sat in the upper balcony behind the stage for the concert. Dylan, as I would later find out he often does, changed many of the song arrangements to the point you didn’t immediately know what they were. Tammy hasn’t yet forgiven me for that night yet. Here is the setlist from that concert.

Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist by John Piper. Multnomah. 368 pages. 2011 edition

****

I recently re-read this modern-day classic by John Piper, this time the 2011 revised and expanded edition, and with a group of friends. Piper tells us that the book aims to persuade the reader that the chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. The overriding concern of the book is that in all of life God be glorified the way He Himself has appointed.
This book is not light reading. I would recommend reading it slow and discussing it with others. Piper writes that it is a serious book about being happy in God.
He first introduces the concept of Christian Hedonism, one that may be new to you. He writes that the pleasure Christian Hedonism seeks is the pleasure that is in God Himself. The aim of the Christian Hedonist is to be happy in God, to delight in God, to cherish and enjoy His fellowship and favor.

THIS & THAT: A Gathering of Favorite Articles and Quotes

  • When the “Cancel Culture” Invades the Church. You may be aware of a recent media firestorm regarding a respected pastor, who had just celebrated forty years at his church.  The controversy dates to last summer, and some counsel pastor Alistair Begg, and host of the Truth for Life radio program, gave to a grandmother that he had not met before.

  • Amazing Grace in Deep Despair: The Rare Friendship of Newton and Cowper. I really enjoyed reading about the friendship of John Newton and William Cowper in this article from Bruce Hindmarsh.
  • Creeds and the Crisis of Christian Faithfulness — A Conversation with Carl Trueman. On this episode of the Thinking in Public podcast, Albert Mohler visits with Carl Trueman (who I enjoyed a Covenant Seminary class on B.B. Warfield with), about his newest book, Crisis of Confidence: Reclaiming the Historic Faith in a Culture Consumed with Individualism and Identity.
  • He Was a Kind Man. Tim Challies in writing about R.C. Sproul, states: “As much as we have benefitted from all of Sproul’s gifts and talents, from all he did and all he founded, his family gave us a gift of their own—a reminder that the greatest accomplishments are accomplishments of character and the greatest legacies are legacies of divine attributes displayed in a redeemed life.”
