A Prayer for Easter

Our Father in Heaven,

As Christians around the world celebrate Resurrection Sunday, we thank you for the sacrifice that your Son made on our behalf, a sacrifice we don’t consider, meditate on, or give thanks for often enough. In fact, it’s usually only during this time of the year that many of us even think about the resurrection.
In perfect unity with the other members of the Trinity, Jesus willingly came to earth as a human, as one of us, enduring suffering and temptation just as we do, but without sin. From the beginning, Jesus knew that His earthly mission would end up on a cruel Roman cross. He prayed in the garden that his cup would pass, but He was in complete submission to Your will.
In the “Great Exchange” on the cross, Jesus took on himself the sins of all Christians – past, present and future. In exchange, He gave us His righteousness.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.  (2 Corinthians 5:21)

This is Amazing Grace! Hallelujah! What a Savior!

We thank you today for that sacrifice. It is a sacrifice, the only sacrifice, that gives us hope. Hope for eternity. This world is incredible with all of its blessings, but we also face loss, disappointment, shootings, sickness, war, death, failure, etc. all as a result of sin. But one day, because of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, death, the final enemy, will be defeated. On that day, there will be no more death, and every tear will be wiped away.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.  (Revelation 21:4)

Father, we thank you for the perfect, obedient life of Jesus. We thank you for His sacrificial death on a cross. And, we thank you for His resurrection, which offers hope, to a world that has lost hope.

We pray this in Jesus’ precious name,  Amen

What is Your Favorite Book, Chapter and Verse of the Bible?

In 2 Timothy 3:16, the Apostle Paul tells us that:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.

Given that all scripture is God’s word, is it OK to have favorite books, chapters or verses of the Bible? I believe it is. Derek Thomas in his Ligonier teaching series Romans 8: No Condemnation, gives a scenario in which we are with someone in the final moments of their life. Would they rather hear read to them a comforting passage from a psalm, the words of Jesus, or a genealogy passage from Exodus 6? All are equally inspired, but some are more loved and helpful than others. Continue reading

CAVES – NEEDTOBREATHE
****

CAVES is NEEDTOBREATHE’s ninth studio album and their first since 2021’s Into the Mystery. The excellent album, which features eleven new songs, was produced by Cason Cooley and the band, and features collaborations with Carly Pearce, Judah & the Lion, Foy Vance, and Old Dominion. NEEDTOBREATHE has been making music for more than twenty years and this new album was my favorite for 2023.

Here are a few comments about each song:
The Cave – This upbeat opener was written by Bear Rinehart, Josh Lovelace, and Mokita. The song opens with guitar, with the full band kicking in before verse two. The song features a guitar solo. He needs some time to be on his own in a world without a mirror.
Key lyric:
First light is coming and there’s
No more need for hiding

Being Elisabeth Elliot: The Authorized Biography: Elisabeth’s Later Years by Ellen Vaughn. B&H Books. 300 pages. 2023
****

This is part two of Ellen Vaughn’s outstanding biography of Elisabeth Elliot, following 2020’s Becoming Elisabeth Elliot. You can read my review of that book here.
The author relies on Elliot’s private journals and never-before-published letters. With that information, she had a choice. She could write a victorious, “inspirational” white-washed story, or she could tell it straight, which is what she chose to do. This allowed us to read Elliot’s very personal thoughts. Some readers may be surprised with some of those thoughts. But the author tells us that Elliot herself railed against the image-conscious habits of the Evangelical Machine, whose every story must end with glorious conversion and coherent happy endings, lest God look bad.

A Prayer for Spring

Our Father in Heaven,
We thank you that in our area of the Midwest it has been a rather mild winter. Though it seems that across the country, from west to east, from the south to the northeast, there are new major winter storms almost every week, we have gotten very little snow and just a handful of days when the temperature was so cold it kept us from doing what we needed to do outside.
Seeing bulbs begin to emerge up out of the frozen soil, we are again reminded of your faithfulness as you sovereignly control the changing of the seasons. You have made the moon to mark the seasons and the sun knows exactly its time for setting. (Psalm 104:19).  [Enjoy listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.]

What Theological Hills are You Willing to Die On?

In our NXTGEN Pastors Cohort, in which we meet monthly to teach seminary students soft skills, we recently discussed the module “Choosing Wisely: Leadership Triage”. This article is inspired by that module.

A part of the module was based on Gavin Ortlund’s book Finding the Right Hills to Die On: The Case for Theological Triage. The phrase “Not a hill worth dying for” has often been associated with the battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam. The word “triage” comes from the French word trier, “to sort things out.” The word is often used in a medical situation such as “the sorting of patients (as in an emergency room) according to the urgency of their need for care.” In Ortlund’s book, he points to Albert Mohler’s metaphor of theological triage as a system of prioritization (see Mohler’s article “A Call for Theological Triage and Christian Maturity”).

When you consider the doctrines of Christianity, or the theological issues we face, which of those would you consider to be ones that were “worth dying for”? For example, during the Reformation, people were willing to die for theological issues such as justification by faith alone, or the presence of Jesus in the Lord’s Supper. Continue reading

Music Review:
Accentuate the Positive – Van Morrison
****

Van Morrison returns with Accentuate the Positive, his 45th studio album overall, his twelfth in the past ten years, and second of 2023, following the excellent Moving on Skiffle. Covering nineteen songs made popular by the Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and others, the album finds Morrison returning to one of his childhood passions, this time to rock ‘n’ roll.
With Morrison’s voice in top form, backed by his excellent band and background singers, this album is a lot of fun. As one reviewer wrote, it was if they were hanging around the studio having a party playing music they love without knowing the tapes were running.
Morrison is joined on guitar by Jeff Beck on one of his last studio performances on “Lonesome Train”, on which Chris Farlowe adds vocals. Taj Mahal joins Morrison on “Lucille” and “Shake, Rattle and Roll”.
