Leadership Attributes: Leaders are Appreciative

As we continue our series on leadership attributes, we now turn to appreciation. Several years ago, I asked a group of leaders and co-workers in the organization I worked what attributes of a leader were important to them. I received a wide variety of responses. One of the attributes that was mentioned was appreciative. To be a leader others want to follow you need to be appreciative.
In my experience, most employees in whatever area – business, church, non-profit, etc. – work hard and want to do a good job. They take pride in their work. At the same time, they want to feel appreciated. They want to know that their leader notices the work they do. Continue reading

A Prayer for the Sabbath

Father in Heaven,
Today is the Sabbath, or the Lord’s Day, as we refer to it after Jesus’ resurrection Day. How can we honor this day, and treat it differently from any other day of the week?
In Genesis 2: 1-3, You set the pattern for us:
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Leadership Attributes: Leaders Add Value

John Maxwell is well known for stating that he wants to “add value” to those he leads and mentors. Maxwell’s “Law of Addition”, from his classic book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, states that leaders add value by serving others. That law, which is what I believe servant leadership is all about, is my favorite law from what is one of my favorite leadership books. Leaders are there to serve their followers, not the other way around. Maxwell tells us that when you serve others, their success becomes your success.  But what does it actually mean to “add value” to others?   Continue reading

Leadership Attributes: Adaptability

In our series on leadership attributes, we now look at adaptability. Being adaptable is essential for leaders. If you are not adaptable, you are not going to be a successful leader. Our world, and certainly our work world, is constantly changing, and not just in the technology we are required to learn. Leaders have to be adaptable in order to meet the changing needs of customers and their own organizations. Continue reading

MUSIC NEWS

Song of the Week: Victory in Jesus (Christ Won the Victory)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Matt Boswell

This week’s song of the week is “Victory in Jesus (Christ Won the Victory)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Matt Boswell, recorded live at the 2024 Sing! Getty Music Worship Conference in Nashville. The song was written by E. M. Bartlett, Matt Boswell, Keith Getty, and Kristyn Getty.

“Victory in Jesus” is one of the greatest gospel songs ever written, full of vitality and celebration of the good news of Christ.  This new version – written in cooperation with the family that has stewarded the song for decades – builds on the original lyric to further proclaim the decisive work of Christ to set the sinner free.

Watch the performance of the song here.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus
My Savior forever
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory
Beneath the cleansing flood
Verse 1
I heard an old, old story
How a Savior came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me
I heard about His groaning
Of His precious blood’s atoning
Then I repented of my sin,
“Christ won the victory!”
Verse 2
I heard about His healing
All his miracles revealing
That He alone can save a soul
And set the captive free
I’m happy in His promise
How soon He’s coming for us
And home with Him I’ll sing again
“Christ won the victory!”
Verse 3
I’ll tell the old, old story
Till my Savior comes from glory
I’ll tell of all the Lord has done
To set this sinner free
That all who will believe him
By Faith can still receive him
And share in that redemption song
“Christ won the victory!”

Ask Pastor John: 750 Bible Answers to Life’s Most Important Questions by Tony Reinke. Crossway. 712 pages. 2024
****

One of my favorite podcasts is Ask Pastor John, in which the host Tony Reinke reads questions from listeners to Pastor John Piper for him to answer. At the time of the writing of this book, 1,881 episodes of the podcast had been released, which have been played over 230 million times, or about 125,000 times each. Currently, Reinke and Piper release two episodes of the podcast each week – on Mondays and Thursdays.
Reinke tells us that to understand the podcast’s success, you need to understand one part of John Piper’s life, the part about why he thinks asking good questions is essential to succeeding in life. He states that over time, Piper came to discover that Christian learning is the process of heart convictions gained by asking great questions and finding convincing answers in the Bible. A quote from Piper included in the book was “All learning is the fruit of question-asking and answer-seeking”.
