To celebrate three years of publication, the Kindle version of my book Called to Lead: Living and Leading for Jesus in the Workplace, will be on sale for just $.99, beginning at 6:00 am on Thursday, July 6 until midnight Thursday, July 13 CST.
In this book, I bring my unique perspective of having been a leader for nearly 38 years at a Fortune 50 organization, a seminary graduate and a leader in my church for more than 25 years, to the growing faith and work conversation. I make the case from the scriptures and many books that I’ve read, that God values our work and callings, as long as we are doing work that is pleasing to Him. I also hope to help you to determine your callings.
The book was written for those who want to know that God values what they do in their work and callings, as they do it to serve and glorify Him. The book is also written for those in the “pews” who struggle to see the connection between what they hear from the pulpit in Sunday morning worship with the rest of the week. The book can be read individually, or in a group setting as “Questions for Reflection and Discussion” are included at the end of each chapter. Here are a few endorsements of the book:
“I rejoice to read sound words on how to integrate a Christian leader’s faith and work from such a faithful elder, who has immersed himself in the contemporary and historical writings of Reformed theologians and the essence of the Gospel. Bill Pence’s own integrated leadership in this area has spread by his mentoring of other leaders in the workplace and the “pews,” his Coram Deo blog, and his service in his local church. God has made Bill a rich resource to recover what was lost in the divide between faith and work.”
Dr. Robert Davis Smart, Senior Pastor of Christ Church (PCA), Normal, Illinois and author of many books including Calling to Christ
“For four decades, Bill seamlessly used his spiritual gift of leadership while serving in various church ministries and also at work. He has a keen understanding of the value of all work done as unto the Lord and finding your calling. I am excited to see how God will use this book to train men and women who are committed to leading like Jesus led, in humility, holiness, and love.”
Russ Gehrlein, Master Sergeant, U.S. Army (Retired), author of Immanuel Labor—God’s Presence in Our Profession: A Biblical, Theological, and Practical Approach to the Doctrine of Work
“In this book, Bill shares his belief that “God values our work and callings, as long as we are doing work that is pleasing to Him.” The book contains many helpful takeaways, learning resources to dig deeper and explore on your own, and end-of-chapter questions for personal reflection or small-group study. Bill also shares a six-week course he developed and implemented in his own church.”
Greston Miller, Retired Leadership Trainer and Coordinator at a Fortune 50 company and Licensed Secondary Education Teacher
“There are so many books on leadership out there, it’s hard to know where to start. Why not start with the guy who has read them all, processed them, and lived them out for years with joyful intensity under the watchful eye of his Savior?
Bill Pence’s Called to Lead is part autobiography, part bibliography, and part practical theology on the reflective glory of leadership and work. It’s a wonderful jump into the mind of a man who loves God, loves the church, and loves to see the people around him thrive in their callings, especially in the calling to lead. Having served alongside Bill for almost 11 years as one of my elders in my church, I gained much from his wisdom, encouragement, humility, and passion, and my hope is that in reading this book, you’ll experience an inkling of the same.”
Rev. David Keithley, Pastor of Hanna City Presbyterian Church, Hanna City, Illinois
“I had the privilege of working with Bill, and on a daily basis saw him demonstrate through his words and his actions what servant leadership is all about. In his book, Bill offers practical ideas and poses introspective questions for discerning your calling, living your work as a ministry, and leading with a servant heart.”
Julie Anderson, MBA Illinois Wesleyan University
“Drawing from almost forty years of experience, Bill Pence sets out a compelling vision of why and how to do work as a Christian leader. Bill lays a clear biblical foundation for work before building upon it with proven principles and practices pulled from today’s top leadership minds. This book is biblical, practical, encouraging, and a great discipleship took with its short chapters and discussion questions. Pick up Called to Lead to hear how one faithful leader fulfills his calling to work before the face of God. You’ll be glad you did.”
Kevin Halloran, Author of When Prayer is a Struggle and serves with Open the Bible
“Bill has taken his lifelong observations and filtered them through his deep, abiding faith and his commitment to Servant Leadership. Reflecting upon his insights as you read, this book will deepen your faith and grow within you a love of Christian, Servant Leadership.”
