The Breadwinner, rated PG
** ½
The Breadwinner is the first feature film starring comedian Nate Bargatze. It’s a humorous film about how Nate, a dad played by Bargatze tries to manage the household and take care of his three daughters while wife Katie, played by Emmy nominee Mandy Moore (This is Us), is gone for weeks to pursue a business opportunity. The film will appeal to all ages and would be a good one for the entire family to enjoy together.
The film was directed by Emmy winner Eric Appel (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) and written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana. As the credits roll at the end of the film, you see jokes from Bargatze’s standup routine that made it into the script of the film.

Nate Wilson is the leading Toyota car salesman in the greater Nashville area. His manager is Dan, played by Emmy nominee Zach Cherry (Severance), and his sales competitor is Peyton, played by Oscar nominee Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick). Nate loves his job, and he is good at it.
Katie does an excellent job of managing the Wilson home. In fact, she has developed a tool that helps her do that. She takes the tool on the Shark Tank television program and wins a $100,000 deal. The one catch is that Nate must take time off of work to take care of the home and their three daughters – Gracie, played by Stella Grace Fitzgerald, Sam played by Charlotte Ann Tucker, and Hadley, played by Birdie Borria – while Katie can focus on her business.
Nate assures Kate that he can handle things, and Katie heads off to South Korea. But things go from bad to worse for Nate and the girls.
The film does not include any content issues. It’s not a great film, but it you enjoy Bargatze’s deadpan humor, you’ll enjoy the film.
