My Review of the Movie “Solo Mio”

Solo Mio, rated PG
***

Solo Mio is a romantic comedy set in Italy about a man who was left at the altar, and is trying to pick up the pieces of his life. The film was directed by Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane, who also wrote the film with Kevin James. The film includes some beautiful scenery of Italy.
Matt Taylor, played by Emmy nominee Kevin James (The King of Queens, Paul Blart: Mall Cop), is a fourth-grade art teacher who proposes to teacher Heather, played by Julie Ann Emery (Better Call Saul), in front of their class. They plan for a big wedding celebration in Rome. But, when Heather does not walk down the aisle, Matt finds that she has left, leaving him a letter in the dressing room, along with her unworn wedding dress.

The couple had paid for an elaborate honeymoon package – hotel room, tandem bicycle tours, dinners, etc. When he is unable to get a refund, Matt decides to participate in the events, and as a solo with other honeymooners, he sticks out like a sore thumb. A few of the other honeymooners, Julian, played by Kim Coates, married three times to Meghan, played by Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How I Met Your Mother),and Neil, played by Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen), who has married his own therapist Donna, played by Julee Cerda,    decide to help Matt. Matt doesn’t drink but the guys take him out for a night of drinking, where he meets and gets drunk with Claudia, played by Caterina Silva.
The next day, sporting a hangover, Matt gets his wallet stolen by a group of kids outside of a coffee shop. Gia, a barista, played by Nicole Grimaudo, is able to get it back for him.
Within a very short time, the two begin to spend time together, though Matt doesn’t tell Gia why he is in Italy, and what has just happened to him, which is key to the story. They clearly enjoy each other’s company, and Gia invites Matt and the other four honeymooners to her family’s Tuscan villa, where a surprise awaits the visitors.
The film, which moved a little slow at times, includes some drunkenness, but no other significant content issues. It was nice to see a quality PG film made.
Overall, Solo Mio was an enjoyable film with beautiful scenery, and would be a good date night movie.
