Hints of Hope: Essays on Making Peace with the Proximate by Steven Garber

Steven Garber, author of Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good, was the speaker at my Covenant Theological Seminary graduation in 2014.
From the Amazon description:
“Through eight lyrical and reflective essays, one of today’s most thoughtful spiritual writers Steven Garber explores the idea of the “proximate”―a word from the Latin “proximatus,” to draw near. Garber invites us to draw near to the deepest realities of life and to see with greater clarity and compassion―recognizing what is true, right, and beautiful in the world, even as we see the suffering all around us.
Hints of Hope probes what it means to be human; to wrestle with the contradictions we all face in our marriages, in our workplaces, in our friendships and vocations. We all experience beauty and brokenness, wonder and despair, joy and sorrow. We live with disappointment and grief and pain . . . wanting more, expecting more, but never being completely fulfilled. Paradoxically, as we make peace with the proximate, our vision is expanded to see more clearly the glimmers of beauty and grace that thread their way through our lives. Garber suggests that those hints of hope are enough in this frail world of ours, “a world stretched taut between what is and what someday will be.”
Written in memoir form, Hints of Hope weaves together decades of Garber’s travels, teaching, and personal musings to offer a tapestry of wisdom on vocation, culture, faith, and hope. Readers of Wendell Berry, Parker Palmer, Marilyn McEntyre, Philip Yancey, and Frederick Buechner will find a rich, soul-nourishing feast within these pages.”

Still Here: Life Together on the Long Way Home by Steven Curtis Chapman and Mary Beth Chapman
To be published March 24.
From the Amazon description:
“Everybody knows the music. Everybody knows, as well, their tragedy. But what makes the Chapmans so remarkable—Steven Curtis and Mary Beth—is that the same endurance their relationship embodies can be true of each of ours as well.
Still Here is their take on marriage, on parenting, on the lives we live and the promises we make. The Chapmans’ story, like all our stories, is one of total dependence on God’s grace and goodness, on His faithfulness and forgiveness, and on His readiness to redeem, in all of us, every outbreak of brokenness.
It’s been more than forty years of that now, together, and they’re inviting you inside to see it, to feel it—not to show you how it’s done, but to show you it can be done. Come along on their journey, and see yourself on your journey, trusting God for His faithful mercies on all our journeys home.”

Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar by Alan Shipnuck
To be published March 31.
From the Amazon description:
“The definitive biography of the most important, popular, and confounding player of the post-Tiger era, masterfully chronicled by Alan Shipnuck, the bestselling author of Phil and LIV and Let Die.
Rory McIlroy contains multitudes. He can overwhelm a golf course with his transcendent talent and then, at the next tournament, look utterly lost. McIlory is golf’s most eloquent ambassador and a trash-talking troll, sometimes in the same press conference. The child of a working-class family from a small town in a war-torn homeland now commutes to work in his own G-VI and counts billionaires as confidantes. A dozen years ago, McIlroy asked Alan Shipnuck a question about the player he had modeled himself after, Tiger Woods: “What’s he really like?” As McIlroy enters the last act of his highly eventful career, this book is a chance to redirect that old question and try to understand a man of deep complexity and contradictions.
McIlroy’s victory at the 2025 Masters packed such an emotional punch because he is golf’s most vulnerable superstar. Across two decades as a pro he has been the anti-Tiger, letting fans into his heart and into his world. When McIlroy collapsed onto the final green at Augusta National, having at last completed the career Grand Slam, golf fans cried along with him because so many saw themselves in his struggles.
But there is much that the public does not know about McIlroy. With reporting chops honed across thirty years on the golf beat, Shipnuck traces McIlroy’s evolution from a young phenom in Northern Ireland to a game-changing force on and off the golf course. Shipnuck has shadowed McIlroy throughout his career and he brings to life all of the heartbreaks and triumphs with thrilling immediacy and unparalleled access. Tabloid romance, bitter business disputes, divisive politicking—it is all part of this portrait of a man in full.
Shipnuck has long been known as the most fearless writer on the golf beat, and he goes deep into McIlroy’s personal history at a time when the spotlight on Rory has never been brighter. This book is squarely in the tradition of bestselling golf biographies like Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian’s Tiger Woods and Shipnuck’s own Phil.”

Guard the Gospel: The Value and Treasure of Creeds by Michael Reeves
To be published November 1
From the Amazon description:
“Throughout much of the world today, the church seems in retreat. Cowed by our culture, Christians fear sticking out and looking odd. What we need, more than ever, is a generation prepared to say boldly and publicly, “I believe.”
Creeds and confessions are opportunities to take our stand and declare our glorious God and his marvelous good news. They renew our vision and affirm our communal identity. They safeguard against error. Timeless yet timely, they proclaim a message that the world needs to hear.”
