Leadership Attributes: Influence

In our series on leadership attributes, we now look at influence. John Maxwell often says that leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less. Do you agree with this? I recall one of my leaders years ago disagreeing with this statement after I had shared it in a meeting. But saying that leadership is influence does seem to make sense.
To begin with, let’s define influence. A dictionary definition of influence that I read was:

The power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible way.

I like to briefly summarize leadership as follows:

  • Casting a compelling vision of a better future
  • Influencing people to believe in that vision enough to follow the leader
  • Developing and multiplying leaders
  • Effectively executing on the vision

You may have many excellent skills. You may be able to craft a compelling vision. You may have charisma and good communications skills. But if you cannot influence others to come along with you, you are not a leader and you are not leading. In fact, Maxwell says that if someone things they are leading, but has nobody following them, they are only taking a walk.

Think of an individual in the business world. They may have years of experience, as well as advanced degrees and certifications. They may have been an outstanding individual contributor to the organization’s success. But they may also have a reputation that keeps top performers from wanting to join their team. If they can’t influence others to come along with them, they are not leading.

In ministry, a pastor may be able to deliver wonderful sermons that bless their congregation. But behind the scenes, they may exhibit a bullying style of leadership to try and force people to follow their vision. But that will not work, at least not for long. Again, they are not leading.

In politics, we hear many candidates with varying visions for how to lead a community, state or country. Some begin to attract initial followers, but eventually they leave, as the followers don’t believe that the candidate has the ability to get elected and carry out their vision. The candidate was not able to influence enough followers to come with them.

In the Bible we read of many leaders who had influence. For example, Paul demonstrated influence in his ability to plant churches. Nehemiah used his influence to get a wall rebuilt much quicker than expected. Peter used his influence to lead the early church. Jesus had influence, and He is still influencing people today who follow His teaching all over the world 2,000 years after he lived.

Leaders who have influence are:

  • Competent
  • Trustworthy
  • Good at developing other leaders
  • Good listeners
  • People of integrity
  • Are clear on where they are taking people
  • Adaptable
  • Motivational and Inspirational
  • People of character
  • Builders of strong relationships

These are just a few traits of influential leaders. What would you add to the list? Who are some influential leaders that you can think of?
