Music Review:
Cover Story – Russ Taff
****

I have long been a fan of Russ Taff. The six-time Grammy-winner’s latest album is Cover Story. The album chronicles Taff’s life journey of recovery and redemption via strong performances of songs by Bob Dylan, U2, Simon and Garfunkel, Prince, and many more.
The album was produced by John Mark Painter, with Steve Taylor serving as executive producer. Matt Wallace mixed the album. Taff is supported by an all-star band of session superstars including Painter, guitarist Kenny Vaughan, keyboardists Blair Masters and Phil Madeira. I especially liked the use of horns and a gospel choir on the album. The album is sure to find it’s way on my best albums of 2025 list.
Incredibly, Taff has been inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame three times – for his work as a solo artist, and as a member of both The Imperials and The Gaither Vocal Band.

~ Song of the Week Lyrics – “Here Is Love Vast As The Ocean (Everlasting Praise)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Sandra McCracken
Taylor and Painter challenged Taff to be vulnerable on the album. The result is that the 71-year-old Taff’s voice sounds as good as it ever has on these songs. The production by Painter is excellent.

“Here Is Love Vast As The Ocean (Everlasting Praise)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Sandra McCracken
Our song of the week is “Here Is Love, Vast as the Ocean (Everlasting Praise)” by Keith & Kristyn Getty and Sandra McCracken, performed live at the 2024 Sing! Getty Music Conference. The song was written by William Rees and William Edwards, with new words and arrangement by Matt Boswell, Keith Getty, and Kristyn Getty.
“Here Is Love Vast as the Ocean” has been called the “love song of the Welsh revival” of the 1900s, a revival that spurred the missionary movement to China and more than 100 million Christians there today. It is a rich, poetic reminder of Romans 5, that by his death Christ demonstrated his love for us while we were still sinners.
Watch the performance of the song here.

Verse 1
Here is love vast as the ocean
Lovingkindness as the flood
When the Prince of Life, our ransom
Shed for us His precious blood
Who His love will not remember?

Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten
Throughout heav’n’s eternal days
Verse 2
On the mount of crucifixion
Fountains opened deep and wide
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
Flowed a vast and gracious tide
Grace and love like mighty rivers
Poured incessant from above
Heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
Kissed a guilty world in love
Verse 3
On the morn of resurrection
Mercy filled the thirsty grave
Where the stone of death burst open
Springs of life flowed unrestrained
Love no heart could ever measure
Joy no sorrows will outrun
Rush upon the soul believing
In the risen, reigning Son
Verse 4
Oh this love, vast love of Jesus
Bids us come and drink and live
To this weary world of longing
What more could our Savior give
Now to Christ who fully loved us
And who freed us from our sin
Be all glory and dominion
Everlasting praise to Him
