This summer I studied the book of Philippians, using Steven Lawson’s excellent teaching series Rejoice in the Lord: Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. YI listened to a message in the series entitled “Kindred Spirit,” which covered Philippians 2:19 -24. In this passage, Paul writes about sending Timothy, a faithful co-worker, to the Philippians. Paul tells them that Timothy will be genuinely concerned for their welfare.
Paul writes in v. 20 that he has no one like Timothy. They had a close relationship. Timothy was his son in the faith. Timothy was a great encouragement to the Apostle Paul. Dr. Lawson tells us that we need a Timothy in our lives as well. Who encourages you? Who serves as a Timothy in your life? Is it your spouse, a family member, a friend, or someone in your church?
Lawson tells us that Timothy was like-minded with Paul. He was a kindred spirit with Paul. Their hearts and souls were knit together. Paul has discipled Timothy. Timothy has been under Paul’s teaching and preaching ministry. He has been under Paul’s influence.
How can you be a Timothy to someone else? How can you be of kindred spirit? How can you come alongside someone else and be an encouragement to them like Timothy was to Paul?
You may be limited in your time or physical ability, but you can still find ways to encourage others. For example, my mother-in-law, who was limited physically, designed greeting cards that were sent to those serving in the military. Why not reach out to someone who is no longer able to go to church or is in a nursing home by calling or visiting them or sending a card? Or contact someone and invite them to lunch? How about suggesting reading and discussing a book with them or enjoying a walk together? Sometimes, it is just an unexpected phone call or card received in the mail that will brighten their day.
What other thoughts do you have about how we can be a Timothy to someone?
