For years, Ligonier Ministries has produced high quality teaching series, with content aimed at an education level between adult Sunday School and seminary. I’ve listened to four teaching series from Ligonier that I want to recommend to you. The teaching series come in both video and audio format, though I almost always use the audio format for convenience. The Basics of the Christian Life – Sinclair Ferguson

Sinclair Ferguson is probably the living theologian I most respect and appreciate. In this series, he addresses what a Christian is, what it means to belong to a church, how we grow in grace, etc. Over twelve messages, he traces every stage of the Christian life and teaches us how to live to the glory of God. This series is a nice companion to Ferguson’s book Maturity: Growing Up and Going On in the Christian Life.

Truth and Consequences – Albert Mohler

I listen to Albert Mohler’s The Briefing each weekday morning, which is a fast-moving daily analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview. This 10-part teaching series is a good companion to The Briefing. In the series, Mohler “connects the development of the secular mind to its modern-day inconsistencies so that Christians will be able to show others the consequences of what they believe and shine the light of truth in a dark world.” The series can be a bit challenging, but it’s well worth it.

Romans 8 – Derek Thomas

I really enjoyed Derek Thomas’ 2011 book on Romans 8, How the Gospel Brings Us All the Way Home. I’ve also enjoyed his teaching series on The Pilgrim’s Progress and on the book of Job. In this twelve-part teaching series, Thomas takes us through each verse of Romans 8 and explains why he considers it to be the greatest chapter in the entire Bible.

The English Reformation and the Puritans – Michael Reeves

I was introduced to the ministry of Michael Reeves at the Ligonier National Conference, where he has now spoke a few times. I listened to this twelve-part series to prepare for a trip to Great Britain. Reeves provides a good overview of the English Reformation, and then looks at a few Puritans – Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin and in particular, John Owen.
