A Prayer for the New Year

Father in Heaven,

We come to You this morning as we welcome in a new year with much anticipation. Today, we look forward to a day of rest, perhaps time with friends and family, enjoying a meal, going to a movie or watching football.
What do You have planned for us in 2026? How can we serve You and others with the gifts, talents and resources You have blessed and equipped us with? How can we make a difference in the lives of others this year?
As we look forward to a new year, and for some of us, a much-needed fresh new start, we also look back at 2025. Thank You for all of the blessings You have given us in our vocations, in relationships, and in our educational pursuits. Thank You for those who came to a new relationship with Jesus, Your Son, during the year. Thank You for the memories made with loved ones on vacations throughout the year. You have been so good to us.

A Prayer for the New Year

Father in Heaven,

It’s hard to believe how fast time passes. It does seem that the older I get, the faster each day, week, month and year passes by. As we look forward to 2023, we want to thank you for 2022, and all the blessings that you provided us each and every day. For jobs, health, family and friends. For the resources to provide for our families. We thank you for our leaders in the workplace, government and our churches. We truly feel blessed.

Father, we also ask for your wisdom and guidance as we face challenges such as job loss, rising prices, illness and relationship issues. We pray that we will be drawn closer to you through the difficulties of life, and that many who have never had a relationship with you will drawn into one in 2023.

We pray for those who lost loved ones in 2022, and for those who are currently facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses at this time. Comfort them and their loved ones, Father, with your peace and your word:

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,
for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

As we look to a new year, may it be a time of fresh starts in health, spiritual growth, relationships, and perhaps vocations. May we find new ways to love and serve others because you have first loved us.

We ask all these things in Jesus’ name, Amen

A Prayer for the New Year

Our Father in Heaven,

On this first day of a new year, we thank and praise you for the many blessings that you provided for us in 2019. Some welcomed new children into their families, and what a blessing those children were. Some had career success, or enjoyed a year of retirement. Some enjoyed wonderful family vacations, deepening relationships. Still others experienced difficult years, perhaps losing a loved one, their health or their jobs, struggling to pay for essentials with each paycheck. In all of these situations we give you adoration and look to you as the sovereign, all powerful God of the universe, in control of all things.

As we look towards 2020, we want to live each day for you and your glory. We pray that we will grow in the following areas:

  • Spiritual Growth. We pray for the help of the Holy Spirit to grow in our faith as we worship you in our local churches – or find a good gospel believing church if we don’t already have a church home. We pray that we would be faithful in reading and studying the Bible, as well as other good books, so that we can get to know you better and love you more. We pray for good prayer and devotional time each day.
  • Physical Health. We pray for good health this year. Thank you for the doctors and nurses who labor so well, working long hours as they help to care for us. We pray that we would care for our bodies well by eating in a healthy manner, exercising regularly, and getting plenty of sleep so that we can serve you and other people well.
  • Relationships. We pray that we would strengthen already good relationships and reconcile those that are broken, repenting and asking for forgiveness as necessary.
  • Service.  We pray that we would be generous with our time in serving others in our families, churches and communities.

Father you have given us so much, most of all your Son who came to earth as a man and went to the cross to provide salvation for us. We look forward to this new year and ask for thankful hearts for your blessings and opportunities, and ask for your grace, strength and comforting Presence in the challenges that it will provide us. Draw many to your Son this year so they may give you praise.

In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen
