R. C. SPROULBOOK REVIEWS

This week we look at two new book releases from R.C. Sproul:

Holy Week: The Week That Changed the World by R.C. Sproul. Ligonier Ministries. 88 pages. 2025
***

R.C. Sproul went to be with the Lord in December, 2017. Fortunately, he left a tremendous amount of teaching material for Ligonier Ministries to release in book form in the years after his death. Ligonier edited and adapted Dr. Sproul’s original material to create this volume, with the assistance of Sproul’s wife Vesta.
This short book looks at one week, from the time in the upper room when Jesus established the new covenant with his disciples through the time Jesus appeared to Thomas after His resurrection.

What are Your Plans for this Summer?

My wife Tammy and I live in the Midwest and we get to experience all four seasons. Summer is by far my favorite season of them all. I enjoy the warm temperatures and the fact that it remains light until almost 9 pm.
Summer may provide you a more relaxed schedule. What goals or plans do you have for the summer? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Do an in-depth study of a book (or books) of the Bible, perhaps with a group at church or individually.
  • Set exercise goals such as how many miles you will walk or run. A friend is training for the Chicago Marathon. Perhaps you will want to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.
  • Listen to podcasts or an audiobook as you walk or run.
  • Freshen up your garden. Each year we check to see which plants have made it through the cold winter. That review determines what we need to purchase to fill up the empty spaces in our garden.
  • Read a few books. Enjoy sitting outside on your patio or in a park, or take a new book you’ve been looking forward to reading on your summer vacation.
  • Make a point to spend time with friends, perhaps over breakfast or lunch.
  • Invite a friend to church and then take them to lunch afterwards.
  • Write a book. It’s easier to get a book published independently than you might think. Tammy and I have written three books in the past five years. Two of my friends are in the process of writing books at this time.
  • Start a blog. Do you have a special talent or area of interest? Why not start a blog and write about it?
  • Attend the Getty Worship Music Sing! Conference with the theme of From Generation to Generation, and the launch of the Sing! Hymnal at the beautiful Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville.
  • Get a dog. Is there anything better than getting a puppy? Tammy and I have had five wonderful dogs (four Alaskan Malamutes and one Samoyed) since we have been married. Getting a dog in the summer will make housebreaking and training easier than if you get one during cold weather.
  • Take casual drives and day trips. We often enjoy driving out to a few lakes we have in the area, and enjoying a meal while we are out.

These are just a few suggestions of goals or plans for the summer. What would you add to this list?  Watching your kids/grandkids baseball games?

THIS & THAT: A Gathering of Favorite Articles and Quotes

  • How Can Christians Overcome Fear in Evangelism? In this video, Michael Reeves explains that Christian evangelism doesn’t depend on personal eloquence but on Scripture’s inherent power, encouraging believers to trust God’s Word rather than their own abilities when sharing the gospel.

  • What Are Some Warning Signs of Legalism? In this video, Sinclair Ferguson explores how legalism manifests in our hearts through our tendency to try to earn God’s favor and judge others by standards that distort the gospel.
  • Jesus’ Teaching on Marriage and Gender. Many people are rejecting the teaching in Genesis about the boundaries of marriage and gender. But Jesus didn’t reject it. On this episode of the Things Unseen podcast, Sinclair Ferguson shows that Christ’s way is the only way for God’s image-bearers to flourish.

Leadership Attributes: Compassion and Empathy

As we continue in our series on leadership attributes, we now look at compassion and empathy. Not long ago, I was talking with some friends, and they mentioned a leader at the organization that we all used to work at. The perception was that this leader was a person who had no compassion. That was a particularly striking comment, as the organization had been going through a difficult time, resulting in the reduction of a significant number of employees. Leaders, let it never be said of you that you lack compassion. Continue reading

Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson. Penguin Press. 348 pages. 2025. Audiobook read by Jake Tapper
***
This book was written by Jake Tapper, of CNN and Alex Thompson of Axios. The two interviewed 200 people, including members of Congress, White House staffers and campaign insiders, primarily after the 2024 presidential election.
The book claims that Biden’s inner circle helped to conceal his declining physical and cognitive health as he and his aides insisted he was fit to serve a second term. The Democratic Party failed to question that decision until after Biden’s disastrous June 27, 2024 debate with Donald Trump, and by then, it was too late.
The authors write that their only agenda is to present the disturbing reality of what happened in the White House and the Democratic presidential campaign in 2023-2024. They tell the story pretty much chronologically.
