Hey Y’all – Adam Wainwright
***

Adam “Waino” Wainwright was a legendary pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, winning 200 games in his outstanding career. Hey Y’All, which he describes as a 90’s country music vibe, is his first album. Wainwright’s country music influences include artists like Alan Jackson, George Strait, Travis Tritt, Tracy Lawrence and Garth Brooks. The album, which Wainwright describes as the story of his life, was produced by Gary Baker. The thirteen songs were co-written by Wainwright, Baker and Greg Barnhill, plus songwriting contributions from Jeff King (“American Hearts”) and Matt Johnson (“Hit The Ground Running”). I’m not a country music fan, but I really enjoyed this album.

  • Song of the Week Lyrics ~ Come Unto Jesus by Shane and Shane

The title song speaks to his Georgia roots, where if there’s one thing you can be sure of, down there it’s that they say “Hey y’all”. “A Song Will Bring You Back” is about when you think the past is gone, just like that, a favorite song will bring you back to memories you had when you were first singing it. “Hero in Your Eyes” is a touching song about being a hero to his children. “One Day They Won’t” is another touching song about how one day his children won’t be in his home any longer. Wainwright’s oldest daughter Baylie Grace adds vocals to the song.
“A Good Story” is an upbeat feel-good song about never letting facts ruin a good story. “If You Would’ve Stayed” is a serious song about Wainwright’s father abandoning him when he was young. Wainwright sings on the chorus:
You should’ve seen first grade
Should’ve seen the first home run I made
You should’ve seen the way that my big brother
Stepped up to take your place
You could’ve been the hero
Instead, I had to make it on my own
I can’t help but think how proud you’d be today
If you would’ve stayed.

“If You Knew Georgia” is a joyful ode to his home state. “I Like Coming Back” is about the joy he has being back home with his family after being away. “American Hearts” is a patriotic song. “El Camino” is about riding shotgun in his grandpa’s El Camino. “I’m Just Reminding Me” is a slower song reminding him to be the man he needs to be. “Hit the Ground Running” is an upbeat song love song. The closer “Show Em All” is a mid-tempo song tells us that speedbumps were made for going around and life’s big fails can be our greatest opportunities.

Wainwright’s vocals are strong and the production is clear. There are nods to his faith throughout.

Come Unto Jesus by Shane and Shane

This week’s song of the week is “Come Unto Jesus” from Shane and Shane’s new album Modern Hymns. The song was written by Laura Story, Jordan Kauflin and Matt Merker. You can listen to the song here.

Come unto Jesus, all you who are weary
Come to the mercy seat, fervently kneel
Here bring your wounded heart, broken and needy
Come unto Jesus, mighty to heal

Joy of the comfortless, light for the straying
Hope of the penitent, peace in our strife
Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying
“My yoke is easy, My burden is light”

Come unto Jesus, come unto Jesus
Lay down your burdens, He is enough
Come unto Jesus, rest in His love

Come, taste the Bread of Life broken for sinners
Drink from the cup of His promise made sure
Feast at His table as sons and as daughters
Grace overflowing is yours evermore

Come unto Jesus, come unto Jesus
Lay down your burdens, He is enough
Come unto Jesus, rest in His love

Come now and follow Him, this life forsaking
All that was gained count as nothing but loss
Trade all this world for His kingdom unfading
Come unto Jesus, and take up your cross
Come unto Jesus, and take up your cross
Life everlasting He offers to us

Come unto Jesus, come unto Jesus
Lay down your burdens, He is enough
And come unto Jesus, come unto Jesus
Lay down your burdens, He is enough
Come unto Jesus, rest in His love
Come unto Jesus, rest in His love
